When Hope Becomes a Reality

Lance Weir, a Marine Corps Reservist, handsome and athletic, shattered his C4-5 vertebrae in a diving accident at the age of 21. After months of grueling rehabilitation, he would come to grips with being a quadriplegic.

Despite the daunting challenges of adjusting to his life-changing disability, Lance never stopped believing in possibilities. Pursuing a college degree, learning how to drive a van, and biking from San Francisco to La Jolla is a short list of his many successes. One goal, however, had yet to be fulfilled-Lance's dream of having a home that was designed to allow him to live more independently with his canine companion, Auggie. Nothing grand, but perhaps having the ability to access water for the first time at a comfortable height or doing a 36 degree turn while showering in his wheelchair.

GreenBeachAmerica, a non-profit organization, builds sustainable residences for disabled veterans so they can live independent, productive lives. Call it divine decree with a lot of moving parts, but after the two entities met five years ago, the mission began and Lance's hope is finally about to become a reality.

As an interior designer specializing in Universal Design with DH Design, it has been my privilege to be part of GreenBeach's mission and this project.

Follow us on this journey as we renovate a San Diego beach cottage into a fully adaptable home for Lance and his lovable lab, Auggie.

If you are feeling generous and want to pay it forward, feel free to contribute to the project at http://www.greenbeachamerica.org/
